Surge of Industrial Park Jobs in Sturgeon Bay

By Raquel Lamal. CREATED May 28, 2015

STURGEON BAY, Wis.-  If you're looking for a job in manufacturing, engineering or ship building, Sturgeon Bay might be the place to go.  There are literally hundreds of jobs in the area and business leaders say their biggest struggle is finding enough skilled workers to fill those positions.

"We have a wide range of engineering positions mostly mechanical and chemical engineering," explained President of Therma-Tron-X, Incorporated, Brad Andreae.

At least 30 new employees will be hired at TTX, but others like Bay Shipbuilding Company are looking to add between 100 and 200 positions and at Cadence another 50 jobs need to be filled.

"It's a good problem to have," said Sturgeon Bay community development director, Marty Olejniczak.

City leaders are excited about the recent growth because although much of Door County relies on tourism, it's these stable jobs that keep the economy going.

"A lot of people don't realize that Door County is a manufacturing hub, particularly in Sturgeon Bay," said Olejniczak.

Company leaders say most of the jobs they're looking to fill aren't temporary or season either.

"Our typical employee has been here more than 15 years and we don't plan on every losing an employee here," said Andreae.

City leaders say many of the jobs are hiring right now and wages can be as high as $20 per hour.

PPG Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Electrocoat

PPG Industries celebrated the 50th anniversary of its electrocoat technology at the Coatings and Resins Research Center in Springdale, Pa.

The first patent for the use of electrophoretic painting was awarded in 1917 to Davey and General Electric. Since the 1920s, the process has been used for the deposition of rubber latex. In the 1930s the first patents were issued which described base neutralized, water dispersibleresins specifically designed for EPD.

Electrophoretic coating began to take its current shape in the late 1950s, when Dr. George E. F. Brewer and the Ford Motor Company team began working on developing the process for the coating of automobiles. The first commercial anodic automotive system began operations in 1963.

The first patent for a cathodic EPD product was issued in 1965 and assigned to BASF AGPPG Industries, Inc. was the first to introduce commercially cathodic EPD in 1970. The first cathodic EPD use in the automotive industry was in 1975. Today, around 70% of the volume of EPD in use in the world today is the cathodic EPD type, largely due to the high usage of the technology in the automotive industry. It is probably the best system ever developed and has resulted in great extension of body life in the automotive industry

There are thousands of patents which have been issued relating to various EPD compositions, EPD processes, and articles coated with EPD. Although patents have been issued by various government patent offices, virtually all of the significant developments can be followed by reviewing the patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

TTX was proud to sponsor the " School's out, Nutrition is in" program this year. The following  is a thank you from the Sturgeon Bay's YMCA President.

Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Door County YMCA, I wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you to the three of you and TTX for the free use of your company van for the entire summer.  Wow!  What a tremendous gift and help that was.  Due to your generosity, the YMCA was able to seamlessly and efficiently deliver thousands of lunches, breakfasts and snacks to children in our camps (at the Y and the Boys and Girls Club) and our entire community through our Summer Foods program.  This program has grown since last summer and the use of your van allowed us to take "mobile" by taking the meals to where the kids are.  It was a huge impact.

We thank you and all of TTX for your partnership in making these efforts to serve children of Sturgeon Bay possible and for being such a great friend of the Y and our community.  We cannot thank you enough and hope that there may be opportunities to work together, again.

Sincerely,
Dan Powell

TTX and Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey is an international game played with small hockey sticks, snorkels, protective gear, and fins, where two teams play against each other until they score. It is great for increased cardiovascular development.

Kendall Banks, captain of the US underwater hockey team for many years, moved to Door County, WI and approached Mike McHugh, aquatics assistant at the Sturgeon Bay YMCA, about starting a program. Banks, being exceptional with the swimmers and adults that come in, teaches new ideas and skills each week.

The group needed underwater goals that are quite large and intricate in design and McHugh mentioned the need to Rob Rock and Dan Reichel of Therma-Tron-X, Sturgeon Bay. A design for goals that met regulation play standards was presented to TTX and Therma-Tron-X decided to donate the products.

“Not only taking the time to do a highly professional job with the design and manufacturing, but willing to help our program by donating the goals…was just amazing” states Mike McHugh. “We just started playing this winter and we have a group of 8-10 adults that consistently play each week.”

The Underwater Hockey league plays on Thursday nights at 5:30 at the Sturgeon Bay YMCA.
